envelop wedding dress
During the Dutch Design week I presented my envelop wedding dress.it’s been made out of more than 900 envelops, the cheapest that I could buy in the store’s.I made the design of the dress during a workshop by Alexander Slobbe a fashion designer. The assignment was to design a new wedding dress for the bride of this century. I didn’t want to neglect the design of the so ‘icing sugar sweet classical princess-dress’ were little girls dream off when they think of there dream wedding, but did research on why we wear this classical-style in this way still for our wedding. The classical wedding dress is full of symbolic details that have there origin from medieval period. When people couldn’t read, the symbols that where put on the dress where very important. White was a symbol of virginity. The veil to protect the new-wed for demons that could enter easily in her joyful state. Specific flowers symbolize the character of the bride. So in search for a new symbolic symbol to communicate in this century I choose the envelop to be my shaping material for the dress. Reason why ? Wedding this day’s are involved with lot of contracts witch you have to arrange by judge and laws, lot’s of paperwork include the envelop. Then the bride and groom have to decide how many guest? who do you invite? Sending invitation, again in envelops. For Dutch tradition it’s a custom to put on your wedding wish list a pictogram of a envelop, it’s a polite way of saying that the new-weds would like to receive hard cash in a envelop(this way they can subsidy the wedding-cost).A more romantic aspect of the envelop- dress is they idea of all the love-letters that the bride received from the groom. I like how the envelops of the dress open up and show the blue inside, it’s like the shout out the good news that two people decided to stay with each other for the rest of there life and that the love each other unconditional. This are just some examples why I choose for the envelop but it’s nice that other people when they see the dress have different ideas why the envelop is a good symbol for wedding. I plan to have a foto-shoot with a model (size 40). Any one interest? After that I’m afraid that the dress is difficult to preserve.
Thanks to Mariana Reyes who made this beautiful pictures of the dress
